Minus The Bear - Highly Refined Pirates

Read about the band on Wikipedia, just like you do every other act that comes along and grabs a subheading in NME or Rock Sound once every so often (this is not a confession, this is not a confession, this is not a confession) and you may find some semi-accurate historical information about where the band formed, where their name originated from, how many times the lead singer has lost his car keys etc. Most of the time that is a great way to find out about music old and new. You may even feel slightly more educated for it...

In this case though, I don’t see there as being any point. Just buy this bewildering record.

‘Highly Refined Pirates’ will tell you all you need to know about the band and more. Although each track is subtle, sturdy and breathes essence of math rock technicality, the spine of the music comprises of fantastically unique lyrics, which are just plain beautiful. The bands ability to pull gorgeous and dainty chords out of nowhere and splice them into nine 3-5 minute rock tracks and five interludes is nothing short of tremendous.

Minus the Bear has just released a new record called ‘Planet of Ice’, which is on my ‘to-get’ list, but I’m not in any rush. At least not while I have this gem to prance about to. This record has proved more than just a soundtrack to my 2008 so far, I feel I have found a brand new act to pour over while waxing lyrical about bands of the decade.
