Scott Walker - The Drift
This album is an audio journey of theatrical funeral ballads, anticipation and thick dark curtains. Dressed in crimson and left to wilt, this haunting collection of enchantment and fathom is a tiring and mournful release from one of America’s most cherished vocalists. The Drift is a seventy-minute work of moody orchestral popular songs that wither away as they spin, creating an atmosphere so tragic it is difficult to return to. But I have returned, time and time again to ingest this vivid and unique record. Though the glorious song writing, breathtaking drama and beautiful craftsmanship are almost drowned by the evocative and miserable tone that the album’s creator has specifically assembled, they are very much afloat and are bolder because of it. The Drift is far from an album that will cause its listener to curve a beaming smile, but these curious compositions, once distinguished for what they are, are indeed prone to shaping a sinister grin.
